Some sites are just hard to connect. A mine inland, a plant on an island, a branch office where fiber poles are still a rumor. If you wait for cables, the business may wait for years.
That is where VSAT comes in. The idea is simple: internet via satellite. An antenna on the ground talks to a satellite, and that satellite links to a ground station already on the global internet. You do not need kilometers of trenching or pole permits.
Why cables sometimes are not enough
What wears people down is usually the wait, not the tech. A vendor says fiber is coming. Months pass, permits stall, the route is disputed. Daily reports still have to land. VSAT can go in within days or weeks, not years. That is an operations reason, not a prestige reason.
Fiber is fast and stable. Nobody argues that. But fiber needs a physical path. If your site sits in a valley, a forest, or a small island, the cost of pulling cable can beat the value of the project. Terrestrial wireless also has range limits. Hills, heavy rain, or long gaps between towers can break the signal.
VSAT does not replace fiber in the city. It fills the gap fiber cannot reach. Many companies run two approaches: fiber at headquarters, VSAT at remote sites.
What you should know about latency
Because the signal goes up to a satellite first, there is delay. That is latency. For websites, reports, or a normal video call, it is usually fine. For competitive gaming or millisecond trading, it is not the best pick.
What matters more for business is whether the apps still work. Operations systems, CCTV, and daily reports often run comfortably on VSAT when bandwidth is enough and the network design is clean. If an app is very delay-sensitive, test it before you sign a long contract.
How to choose a plan without regret
Do not look at Mbps alone. Ask the provider:
- What is the committed rate, not just the burst.
- Is there a fair-use rule that quietly slows you down.
- How long installation takes and who handles antenna permits.
- Whether there is a backup option in extreme weather.
- If support is 24 hours or office hours only.
Weather can matter, especially heavy rain. That is not a myth. But the right dish size, a clean install, and a sane configuration usually keep disruption at a level daily operations can live with.
When VSAT is a sensible call
Use VSAT when the site has no decent cable option, the team must stay online every day, and downtime is expensive. Think equipment monitoring, production reports, a small ATM link, or a field office that has to send data to HQ.
If the city office already has good fiber, do not force VSAT as the main path. Keep it as backup or for isolated sites. That mix is usually wiser than hoping one technology solves every condition.
One more thing people miscount: upload. Many plans are sold on download. Remote sites often send more than they receive: report photos, machine logs, short clips, attendance files. If upload is tiny, queues pile up. Ask for both directions, not just the big number on the flyer.
If you have more than one site, do not buy the same capacity just to keep a spreadsheet tidy. A warehouse that sends an evening report is not a plant that streams cameras all day. Profile each location first, then pick the dish and the plan.
Bottom line: VSAT is not magic, but it is useful when you are honest about the field. Pick capacity that matches the load, install it properly, and measure performance in the first weeks. If the numbers hold, a place that used to be “offline” can still stay tied to central operations.
